Intro
Spent most of my life in California, all over it, though mostly Southern California.
The family moved to Garden Grove, Orange County, when I was five (I think)! Back when
it WAS mostly orange groves.
Joined the Navy when I was 19, spent a year in San Diego for boot camp and
Corps school. Restationed in Oakland at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital for three years. During this
time period the family moved to San Diego, and I followed after the service.
Residing in Vista and Ocenside both in Northern San Diego. Then in San Marcos
also Northern San Diego after my divorce.
Moved to Truckee at Lake Tahoe for four years before moving to Washington state. |
Carmel
Along the 17-mile drive in Carmel. This is a very famous
tree along the route. A beautiful drive along the coast. |

Sea World |
A great place, while I lived in San Diego and after the divorce I
kept up a yearly pass for me and the kids. |
They had a huge tank that allowed hand feeding of the dolphins.
A great place to spend a day exploring exhibits and seeing
the shows.
Universal Studios
Even the movie studios got into the theme park craze.
Southern California from Los Angeles down had varied
theme parks and zoos/aquariums scattered here and there. |

San Francisco |
Spending three years in Oakland, I considered San
Francisco more my town than Oakland.
When I finally moved to Washington, I expected Seattle to
be just like San Francisco. Similar in layout only,
landscape is more like Tahoe than SF.

Actually he spent a week on our floor (clinical
research) undergoing a study before he actually
took command.
Earned us a unit commendation as we treated everyone
the same, regardless of their rank.

Spent a whole day on Alcatraz once, only to find out later that
the three rolls of film I took didn't turn out for
one reason or another.

Eastern Sierras
I had two routes that I drove to San Diego from Tahoe.
One was along the Eastern face of the Sierras.
Along the desert stretches I have no idea what I was
doing as my speedometer only went to 120 mph, so it was the
faster route. |
This is Mono Lake, so heavy in mineral salts that it forms
these `piles' along its shore.
The Eastern route was mostly desert, the Sierras capture most
of the rainfall before it gets this far inland.

Typical front of Eastern Sierras.

Kings Canyon
A deep inland valley near the Redwood National
Forest.
Sierras |
The Sierras proper are just dotted with idyllic little lakes.
Devils Postpile
Volcanic upshoot, this is a very out of the way park in
mid California. The road in is harrowing, one-lane for most of
it made passing on-coming traffic an adventure.
Prologue |
Just a short excerpt of some of my California photos.
There will be other books for specific areas of California.
A lovely state, but very dry except for the high Sierras, I am much happier here in
Washington state now.
But still a lot of memories...
